About WINGS
Women Executives (WE) is an organization that provides career-oriented women a forum for professional and personal interaction. Women Initiating and Nurturing Growth through Scholarships (WINGS) is a non-profit program offered by WE. As the sole philanthropic initiative of WE, WINGS provides scholarship and mentoring support for female undergraduate students, 25 years or older, who are pursuing higher education as a way to improve their lives.
Since 1995 the philanthropic arm of Women Executives (WE), Women Executives for Community Service (WECS), has been awarding WINGS scholarships to women attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Queens University of Charlotte, Central Piedmont Community College and Johnson C. Smith University. Each year 13 to 17 scholars are supported by WINGS.
During the past ten years, WINGS has:
- Graduated 45 scholars
- Received corporate sponsorships and foundation donations contributed to the scholarship fund as a way to support education in the Charlotte community
- Provided $200,000 in scholarships
- Donated over 10,000 hours of mentoring support
- Maintained a strong network of post graduate scholars
The women who are selected as WINGS scholars are dealing with life's challenges, but are determined to persevere. Though they may struggle financially and personally, they can improve their circumstances through education and set their family on a path of success. Each scholar is teamed up with a WE member who serves as their mentor.
WINGS scholars have:
- Demonstrated financial need
- Clear educational goals
- Vision for their professional future
- History of overcoming challenges
- Desire to form a strong mentor/mentee relationship
Scholarship recipients must meet established financial need criteria and participate in a competitive application and interview process to be considered for a scholarship. Scholarship funds are administered by the financial aid offices at each of the four partner schools, and students' academic progress and achievement are monitored annually.
